Weather Underground midday recap for Wednesday,March 12,2014
A strong winter storm swept across the Northeast on Wednesday with heavy
snowfall and freezing rain. A strong low pressure system moved eastward
across the Eastern states and over the Eastern Seaboard. This system
pulled moisture in from the Atlantic Ocean and brought heavy snow to the
Northeast from Maine through Pennsylvania and New York. Snowfall totals
ranged from 4 to 6 inches with up to 9 inches reported at Orwell,
Vermont and 7 inches reported at Inlet, New York. Strong winds
accompanied this system with gusts up to 41 mph reported at Diamond
Island, Vermont and 53 mph reported at Erie, Pennsylvania. Winter
weather advisories have been issued across the region and a blizzard
warning has been posted for western New York stated due to these strong
and gusty winds. These areas experienced dangerous roads with white-out
conditions. Winter weather advisories remained in effect for the back
side of this system as snow showers lingered over the Midwest from
Illinois through Ohio.
Meanwhile to the south, scattered rain showers developed south of this
system due to above freezing temperatures. Rainfall totals across the
Mid-Atlantic states and Central Appalachians varied around 1 inch.
Further south, the tail end of a cold front lingered over Florida and
the Gulf of Mexico, which allowed for a few scattered showers to pop up
over the state.
