A Wet and Stormy Mother's Day Is Ahead in Plains, West and Northeast

Mother's Day is almost upon us and some of you will see wet conditions, along with the risk for severe weather, while others will likely enjoy a beautiful day.

Below we break down the forecast by region and take a peek at where there could be some weather related travel problems.

Northeast

Sunday Forecast Northeast

A stubborn, slow-moving trough of low pressure will keep rain showers in the forecast from the eastern half of New York into New England. Conditions, however, will begin to improve Sunday evening. Otherwise, much of the interior Northeast and Mid-Atlantic will see a dry day.
Temperatures will be a bit cool, with highs generally near to slightly below average. Highs will reach the 50s and 60s across the region, with a few lower 70s in parts of the Mid-Atlantic. It will also be breezy, which will make it feel even cooler.
I-87 travel concerns: Rain showers are likely, mainly in the morning, over eastern New York.
I-90 travel concerns: Rain showers are likely from central New York through Massachusetts.  Showers should end by midday in New York.
I-95 travel concerns: A wet day with frequent showers and cool temperatures from the Canadian border down through New England. Mainly dry through the Mid-Atlantic region.

South 

Sunday Forecast South

A ridge of high pressure will keep the vast majority of the South dry and mostly sunny. Some spotty showers are possible from Kentucky to Virginia. A few strong to severe thunderstorms could erupt from central Texas into Oklahoma.
High temperatures for the region will near average, while portions of the Southeast will see above-average temperatures. Most locations will see highs climb into the 80s.
I-20 travel concerns: Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms will develop, mainly in the afternoon and evening, from northern to west-central Texas.
I-35 travel concerns: Showers and thunderstorms are expected from Oklahoma into Texas, with a few severe thunderstorms likely.
I-64 travel concerns: Scattered showers are possible from Kentucky,  across West Virginia, into Virginia.

Midwest and Plains

Sunday Forecast Midwest and Plains

A potent storm system will migrate into the Plains and it will trigger thunderstorms, mainly from Nebraska into Missouri and southward through Kansas. Some thunderstorms are likely to turn severe with large hail and damaging winds. An outbreak of tornadoes is not expected but a few tornadoes are possible.
Temperatures will be close to average for this time of year, with highs typically in the 60s and 70s, while a few 50s are possible in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Winds will also be gusty at times in the Plains.
I-35 travel concerns: Scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop, mainly in the afternoon and evening, from southern Kansas into Iowa. Some thunderstorms will likely be severe with large hail and damaging winds. A few tornadoes are also possible.
I-70 travel concerns: Afternoon and evening scattered showers and thunderstorms from Kansas through Missouri. Some thunderstorms could turn severe with large hail, damaging winds and an isolated tornado is possible. Scattered showers will also be found across parts of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
I-80 travel concerns: Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms can be expected across Nebraska into central Iowa. A few thunderstorms could turn severe in the afternoon with large hail and strong winds.

West

Sunday Forecast West

A strong weather disturbance will push eastward into the Rockies, triggering showers and thunderstorms across a large part of the Intermountain West.  A few showers can also be expected in parts of western Washington and Oregon.
Temperatures will be cooler than average across the Southwest, while above-average temperatures will stretch from Idaho into portions of Montana and Wyoming.
I-5 travel concerns: A passing shower and even an isolated thunderstorm is possible in Washington and Oregon.
I-15 travel concerns: Scattered showers from Montana southward through Utah.
I-40 travel concerns: A few showers across parts of Arizona and New Mexico.
I-80 travel concerns: Showers can be expected from the California-Nevada border area eastward through Wyoming.
I-90 travel concerns: Showers are likely from western Montana and down into Wyoming. Showers will be more scattered across Washington.
