Tornado-producing storms swept into the Plains and Midwest Thursday, rattling the nerves of people across a four-state tornado watch area, including those in Joplin, Missouri, a city still recovering from an EF5 twister in 2011 that killed more than 150 people.
"Scary moments earlier tonight as we were watching a well-developed supercell thunderstorm to the west of Joplin," said meteorologist Carl Parker, who was tracking the storm on-air for The Weather Channel as tornado sirens went off in the city.

Friday is likely to be another stormy day. The threat will be highest from east Texas into the Mid-South, Tennessee Valley and Appalachians with damaging straight-line winds, hail and perhaps a tornado or two possible.
This activity should persist into the evening as a line of severe thunderstorms with locally damaging winds from the Appalachians to the Deep South.
