Los Angeles: Hurricane Marie to Bring Another Round of Rough Surf

While Hurricane Marie will stay well offshore of Los Angeles next week, it will bring a new round of dangerous surf to some Southern California beaches during the middle of the week.
Surf conditions have the potential to be more significant with Marie when compared to Lowell. Marie reached Category 5 hurricane status during Sunday afternoon, Aug. 24, with winds of 160 mph.
As Marie moves along to the northwest and slowly weakens over cooler waters, swells will propagate outward from the storm in the form of large breakers and strong rip currents from Baja California Mexico to Santa Barbara County, California.

Surf conditions will ease for a time into early Tuesday, before building significantly later Tuesday into Friday. Tropical system Lowell brought rough surf to Southern California this past weekend.
Since Marie is a much stronger system than Lowell was, waves will be much bigger and rip currents much stronger when compared to Lowell.

Waves as high as 15 feet are possible. In addition to the danger to bathers and inexperienced boarders, the wave action could result in coastal flooding at times of high tide. In experienced boaters should also exercise caution when venturing into unprotected waters.
While there is a chance of spotty thunderstorms over the Southwestern states as the Eastern Pacific tropical activity continues, not enough rain will fall to alleviate drought conditions in California.
Morning low clouds produced by the marine influence will burn off by midday each day this week.
