Weather Underground midday recap for Sunday, September 8,2013.
Showers and thunderstorms continued to trek through the upper Midwest on
Sunday as a low pressure system neared the Great Lakes. Thunderstorms
also dampened the Southwest and Great Basin, triggering flash flood
watches throughout Arizona and Utah. Frost advisories were also observed
throughout the Northeast.
Flash flood warnings were present throughout the Great Basin and the
Southwest as a result of monsoonal moisture. Northern Arizona
experienced more heavy rain, thus, flood advisories remained in effect
for the area. The remainder of the Southwest continued to experience a
heat wave due to a strong high pressure system in the region.
The northern Plains, including eastern Montana and western North Dakota,
also experienced heavy rainfall, as a result of a lingering low
pressure system. Flood advisories were issued in several Montana
counties and North Dakota. Strong thunderstorms also moved through
Minnesota earlier Sunday, while warm weather persisted throughout the
Midwest. Temperatures in the 90s and 100s were observed across the
Plains, which is above average for this time of year.
Temperatures in the low 30s were recorded in parts of the Northeast,
which initiated frost advisories during the early morning hours. Parts
of New York through Maine continued to experience cold weather as a
result of a recent cold front passage, while the Southeast remained warm
and muggy on Sunday. Spotty thunderstorms were also observed around the
Gulf Coast, both along the Texas coast and along southern Florida
