Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday,December 6,2016

Strong thunderstorms will batter the Southeast on Tuesday, while temperatures plummet across the Intermountain West and the Plains.

An area of low pressure will push northeastward across the Deep South and the southern Appalachians. This system will bring a complex weather pattern to many states across the eastern half of the country. Moisture will surge northward from the Gulf of Mexico, fueling rain and thunderstorms in the Southeast and the southern Mid-Atlantic. Severe thunderstorms will be possible in portions of northern Florida and southern Georgia. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. Meanwhile, cooler air to the north will support the development of mixed precipitation from the Midwest to the coast of New England. The interior part of the northern Mid-Atlantic, as well as interior New England, will experience light to moderate snow. Additionally, freezing rain will be possible along the central Appalachians, focusing in southwest Pennsylvania and eastern West Virginia.

Meanwhile, a robust area of low pressure will move slowly northeastward across the upper Mississippi Valley and south central Canada. This system will usher strong winds and moderate to heavy snow over eastern North Dakota, northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and parts of northwest Michigan. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system will extend westward from the northern Plains to the Northwest. A surge of cold air will trail this frontal boundary as it sinks south and eastward. This cold air will support widespread snow showers in the Intermountain West, the northern Great Basin and the Pacific Northwest. A mixture of rain and mountain snow is also expected for northern California and western Oregon.
