Tropical Depression One-E formed near the Pacific coast of Mexico on Monday afternoon. The threat for flash flooding and mudslides is increasing as the depression nears the Mexican coast.
Here's the latest from the National Hurricane Center:
- Tropical Depression One-E is located about 55 miles south-southeast of Salina Cruz, Mexico, and is moving northeast at 5 mph.
- Maximum sustained winds are around 35 mph as of Tuesday evening.
- The depression is not forecast to strengthen and may become a remnant low either late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
- Heavy rain from this system may cause flooding and mudslides in southern Mexico. Rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches (locally 12 inches) are possible in the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, and eastern Veracruz.
- A tropical storm watch is posted from Salina Cruz to Boca De Pijijiapan.
- This is the first tropical cyclone of the 2016 eastern Pacific hurricane season which officially began May 15.
