The threat for flooding will be renewed in southern India Sunday into Wednesday.
On the heels of the tropical low that produced flooding in parts of southern India last week, another tropical low pressure system will move across southern India.
Due to interaction with both Sri Lanka and India, development into a named tropical system is not expected, though regardless of development, heavy rain is still expected through the first half of the coming week.

The slow movement of this system will result in several days of tropical downpours for parts of India, elevating the risk for flooding. The greatest threat for flooding downpours will be found along the southeast coast of India in Andhra Pradesh, extending west into eastern Karnataka.

Though more isolated, the danger for flooding downpours will shift westward and encompass much of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and western Karnataka. Additional heavy rain may also continue to stream into western Sri Lanka.
Through Sunday afternoon, rainfall exceeded 4 inches (100 mm) in many areas along the southeastern coast of India an in northern Sri Lanka. Chennai has already received 4.6 inches (118 mm) of rain.
Additional rainfall amounts in excess of 100 mm (4 inches) are possible in Chennai and Madurai with flooding downpours possible in Coimbatore, Bengaluru and Kochi.

Flooding will be the primary concern with this tropical threat; however, localized damaging winds are possible in thunderstorms.
In the longer range, the system could track into the Arabian Sea where there will be a higher likelihood for development into an organized tropical cyclone late in the week.
