Strong Earthquake Rocks Oklahoma, Kansas

A strong earthquake rocked parts of the Plains early Thursday morning.
The magnitude-4.7 temblor was centered about 9 miles southwest of Cherokee, Oklahoma, and occurred at 1:42 a.m. CST Thursday at a depth of 3.9 miles, the United States Geological Survey reported.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The earthquake was felt from Norman, Oklahoma, to central Kansas, and from the Texas Panhandle to Missouri, the USGS said.
"It was a quick jolt with windows rattling with [the first waves], then 5-10 seconds later, [the second waves] rattled windows and shook appliances and computer monitors," AccuWeather Enterprise Solutions Meteorologist William Clark said, who felt the earthquake in Wichita, Kansas.
The earthquake sent birds into flight in Oklahoma and Kansas, the National Weather Service said, based on its radars in the two states.

The earthquake would be the largest to strike the region since a magnitude-4.8 temblor hit on Nov. 11, 2011, the USGS reported. In that earthquake, some buildings were damaged at Prague and Sparks, Oklahoma. It was felt in most of central and eastern Oklahoma, northwestern Arkansas, southwestern Missouri, southern Kansas and parts of Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Texas.
The 2011 quake was preceded three days earlier by a 5.6 earthquake that injured two people and destroyed 14 homes in the same area.
