The combination of unseasonably cold air and a storm moving across northern China will result in a significant snowstorm for parts of northern and northeastern China, including Beijing.
From Friday night into Saturday night, generally light precipitation is expected across Beijing and northern parts of the North China Plain.
Snow can accumulate a coating to 5 cm (2 inches) during this time; however, snow will melt on most surfaces, especially during the daytime hours.
A strengthening storm to the west will approach the region on Sunday intensifying the snowfall and resulting in a period of moderate to heavy snowfall that will last into Sunday night.
During this period, snowfall rates as high as 2.5 cm (1 inch) per hour are possible with total snowfall exceeding 25 cm (10 inches) in the hardest-hit areas. Beijing could receive upwards of 15 cm (6 inches) of snow, making it one of the biggest storms in recent years.
This long-duration snow event will cause travel issues, especially at night and from Sunday into Monday morning.
Allow extra time if you must travel as roadways will likely be snow covered during the worst of the storm. Extended flight delays or cancellations are also likely across the region.

Cities that are likely to experience some impacts from this storm include Beijing, Datong, Tianjin and Chifeng.
Following this storm, frigid air will plunge across from Siberia into northern China causing temperatures to be 8-12 C (14-22 F) below normal.
High temperatures will range from -7 to -4 C (20-25 F) in Beijing from Monday through Friday. Overnight low temperatures will be near -18 C (0 F) during coldest nights in the middle of next week.
