The accident occured after heavy rains began in the area mid-afternoon on Friday.
"A cluster of thunderstorms with torrential downpours moved slowly over eastern Kansas late Friday," says Chris Dolce, digital meteorologist for weather.com. "Radar estimates indicate that 4-6 inches of rain fell in a confined area near where the flood death occurred."
A search and rescue operation was launched at Mile Post 118 after the victim's car was swept off the turnpike. The operation lasted over two hours before the car was recovered.
"At approximately 7:00 p.m., a male victim, deceased, was recovered 100 yards downstream," Rich Gould of the Emporia Fire Department told The Emporia Gazette.
No other information on the victim is available at this time, pending identification and notification of next of kin.
