A small earthquake shook residents of the San Francisco Bay Area awake early Tuesday morning, and now experts say they recorded more than a dozen small aftershocks.
The magnitude 4.0 tremor was centered near the East Bay city of Fremont, California, about 17 miles north of San Jose at 2:41 a.m. local time.
Since the initial quake, the USGS told ABC 7 it had recorded 14 aftershocks. The Associated Press said the aftershocks ranged from 1.0 to 2.7 magnitude.
During the early morning tremor, weak-to-light shaking was felt by approximately six million residents from as far south as Watsonville, California, through downtown San Francisco and into areas as far north as Vallejo and Fairfield, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Michelle Jackson in Niles Canyon, just northeast of Fremont said "some things fell off shelves," but no damage was reported.
George Drapeau felt his house shake "back and forth" from "maybe two quick jolts" in Hayward, just north-northwest of the epicenter in Fremont.
Bay Area Rapid Transit -- BART -- reported up to 20-minute delays Tuesday morning due to track inspections done after the quake.
No other reports of damage were received.
