Hurricane Dolores to Drench Mexican Riviera

Highlights

  • Tropical Storm Dolores has strengthened into a hurricane as of Monday afternoon and is expected to become a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale) midweek.
  • Hurricane Dolores is currently located about 235 miles south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico, and continues to move west-northwest at 5 to 10 mph.
  • Dolores is expected to continue to track west-northwestward, pulling away from the southwest coast of Mexico, over the next couple of days.
  • Locally heavy rainfall is expected along the southern Mexican coast as outer rainbands lash the coast. High surf and rip currents are also expected.

The center of Hurricane Dolores is expected to remain offshore. However, a small deviation of the track could bring stronger winds to the coast as tropical storm force winds extend up to 140 miles from the center.
Those who have interests along the southern and southwestern coasts of Mexico should monitor this system carefully.
Hurricane Dolores may bring heavy rain along the southern and southwestern coast of Mexico over the next few days. An additional 1 to 3 inches of rain are possible through Tuesday or Wednesday, mainly in the states of Colima and Jalisco.
As of 6 a.m. CDT Monday, Acapulco had recorded 0.65 inch (16.5 millimeters) of rainfall.
High surf and dangerous rip currents are also risks. According to Mexico's National Meteorological Service (SMN), waves of 10 to 13 feet (3 to 4 meters) are expected along the coast of the states of Jalisco, Colima, Guerrero and Michoacan.
Farther west in the eastern Pacific, Enrique became a tropical storm Monday morning. The western Pacific is also active with Halola and Nangka currently in the basin.
