A cold frontal boundary will extend from the Intermountain West to the central Great Lakes on Monday, while a ridge of high pressure will build over the eastern Pacific.
A cold front will stretch across the Intermountain West, the central Plains, the middle Mississippi Valley and the central Great Lakes. As this cold front moves over a warm, humid air mass, strong to severe thunderstorms will develop across the central and eastern thirds of the country. Severe thunderstorms will be possible over Nebraska, northern Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, southern Minnesota, Illinois, Kentucky, southern Indiana, southern Ohio, West Virginia and southwest Pennsylvania. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. In addition, heavy rain associated with these thunderstorms will bring a threat of flash flooding to eastern Nebraska, Iowa, northern Missouri and northwest Indiana. Disorganized thunderstorms will also be possible across the northern Plains and the Northeast on Monday, while an onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico will bring scattered thunderstorms to the Gulf Coast.
Meanwhile, monsoonal moisture will continue to trigger thunderstorm activity across the Four Corners and the Desert Southwest. These thunderstorms will be scattered in nature, but could lead to flash flooding along valleys that are adjacent to sloped terrain.
