area of low pressure will deepen over the southern Plains on Thursday,
while a cold front will extend across the Gulf Coast and the Eastern
Seaboard.
An area of low pressure is forecast to inch across the southern Plains on Thursday. As this system draws warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico, strong to severe thunderstorms will develop over the nation’s midsection. Severe thunderstorms will be possible over central and eastern Texas, northwest Louisiana, southwest Arkansas and southeast Oklahoma. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. In addition, heavy rain associated with this slow moving system will bring a chance of flash flooding to northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma, Arkansas, northern Louisiana and northwest Mississippi. Disorganized thunderstorms will also push across the central Plains and the Tennessee Valley.
Meanwhile, a cold front will extend across the Gulf Coast and the Eastern Seaboard on Thursday. Showers and thunderstorms associated with this frontal boundary will linger over the northern Mid-Atlantic, New England and parts of the Southeast. High pressure will build to over the Great Lakes, which will keep conditions clear across the upper Midwest.
Out west, monsoonal moisture will bring scattered thunderstorms to parts of the Intermountain West, the Great Basin and the Desert Southwest. Flash flooding will be possible in valleys adjacent to sloped terrain, especially along the northern Sierra Nevadas.
