Chicago Faces Strong Storms, to Turn Septemberlike

Strong thunderstorms will threaten Chicago this weekend before the city gets a taste of September in the coming days.
Typical summer warmth and an increase in humidity is setting the stage for strong thunderstorms to cross Chicagoland toward and during Saturday evening.
The strongest thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging winds, hail and flooding downpours. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
Prior to these violent thunderstorms, Saturday is already starting with periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms moving through and causing flooding issues from the city southward.

The culprit behind the storminess is a cold front, but that is not the front that will usher in the air that will give Chicago a taste of September.
That boundary will arrive after a somewhat humid Sunday unfolds, dropping humidity and erasing the highs in the lower 80s from this weekend. Temperatures will instead be held to the middle 70s on Monday before struggling to climb much above the 70-degree mark on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A high of 85 F is more typical in mid-July, which is the warmest time of the year climatologically. The second half of September is when temperatures in Chicago are usually held to the lower 70s.
Building clouds, some showers and a thunderstorm will be around on Monday, mainly in the afternoon, with another shower likely to put a damper on outdoor plans on Tuesday afternoon.

AccuWeather.com meteorologists are also concerned for waterspouts to pose dangers to boaters on Lake Michigan early in the week.
