EF2 Tornado Hits Boston Suburb of Revere, Massachusetts, Damaging At Least 65 Buildings

Breaking: Tornado Hits Boston

An EF2 tornado packing winds up to 120 mph tore the Boston suburbs of Revere and Chelsea on Monday morning, carving a three-square-mile wide swatch of damage through a residential area.
Although the twister started in Chelsea, the overwhelming majority of damage was in nearby Revere. Revere Mayor Daniel Rizzo says 65 homes and businesses were damaged and 13 are uninhabitable. About 2,800 residences are without power.
The city has opened a temporary shelter at a middle school.
Revere Deputy Fire Chief Mike Viviano said the Fire Department received dozens of calls reporting partial building and roof collapses, and downed trees and power lines. Windows on several buildings were blown out falling trees crushed several cars.

Officials said there were 6 reports of minor injuries. The National Weather Service sent a survey team to the area and confirmed that an EF-2 tornado caused the damage.
Revere police are asking the public to avoid the city until further notice so crews are able to work freely, CBS Boston reports. Crews are working to restore power to several thousand customers and clear roads of downed trees and debris.
Revere is about seven miles north of Boston. Flooding was a bigger issue closer to downtown Boston, where some roads had to be temporarily closed because of standing water, according to Boston.com.
This is just the third time a tornado warning has been issued by NWS Boston this year, according to the Iowa Environmental Mesonet.
