The powerful "Ash Wednesday Storm" was beginning to slam the eastern
U.S. on this date in 1962. The mid-Atlantic endured the worst of the
storm's fury. The storm was responsible for destroying part of the Steel
Pier at Atlantic City, N.J., and causing extensive damage to NASA's
Wallops Island facility. Winds reached 70 mph and offshore seas
approached 40 feet. Two feet of snow fell from Charlottesville to
Winchester, Va., with 18 inches of snow falling as far north as the
middle of Pennsylvania. Snow fell southward to Alabama.
