Major Snowstorm Takes Aim on Pittsburgh

A storm that will bring major disruptions of travel and daily activities to much of the nation will hit Pittsburgh with heavy snow in others Sunday into Monday.
The storm is likely to bring a half a foot to a foot of snow to the central counties of Pennsylvania. There is the potential for much heavier amounts, where sleet and freezing rain do not mix in and if the storm were to track just to the south. Lesser snow is forecast to fall to the north near Lake Erie.
A shift in the storm track by as little as a few dozen miles can make the difference between a nuisance snowfall and a very disruptive winter event over western Pennsylvania and the difference between snow verses a wintry mix with ice farther to the south.

Lengthy flight delays and many cancellations are expected well ahead of the storm, since it will move from west to east across the nation this weekend. The storm will hit portions of the Midwest with snow and ice Saturday into Sunday.
Some snow will fall during Saturday night, ahead of the main storm.
The main storm is forecast to bring very heavy precipitation rates Sunday into Monday in a narrow zone just north of the track of the low pressure area. Snowfall rates can reach or surpass 2 inches per hour in some locations. Such intense snowfall can overwhelm shoveling and plowing operations, as well as strand motorists.
Motorists heading out area highways Sunday into Monday should expect very slippery conditions with the potential for road closures in some locations.
More cold weather will follow the storm Tuesday and Wednesday.
