Published: March 6,2017

Severe thunderstorms will continue to pound portions of the Midwest and South into Tuesday, with damaging winds being the primary threat, though large hail and a few tornadoes may also occur.
Fortunately, we do not expect a repeat of last week's tornado outbreak in those regions.

Current Radar with Watches, Warnings
The setup for severe weather involves:

  • Warm and somewhat-humid air flowing northward from the Gulf of Mexico
  • A strengthening cold front and low-pressure system

Early Monday evening, law enforcement reported a tornado just west of Paxico, Kansas, near exit 331 of Interstate 70.
A brief tornado was also reported by the fire department near Mound City, Missouri. Later Monday evening, a large tornado was reported by spotters near Princeton and Mercer in Missouri.
Additionally, a semi-truck was overturned by strong thunderstorm winds south of Manhattan, Kansas, as well as in Webster City, Iowa.
Farther north in Minnesota, hail up to 4 inches in diameter was measured in the town of Cokato early Monday evening. In addition, thunderstorm winds were strong enough to rip off a shed roof and demolish an old garage near Clarks Grove, Minnesota.
Damage from a possible tornado was reported in Zimmerman and Princeton, Minnesota, as large oak trees had fallen and housing pieces were wrapped around trees. If the National Weather Service (NWS) storm-survey team from the Twin Cities office is able to confirm this tornado, it would be the earliest on record in Minnesota (current record is Mar. 18, 1968).

Significant damage occurred north of the Kansas City metro area later Monday evening near Trimble, Plattsburg and Lathrop in Missouri from a possible tornado. NWS-Kansas City will have to assess the damage to confirm it was indeed a tornado and, if so, the rating.
