Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday,September 17,2016

A stormy weather pattern impacted areas from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast on Saturday, while rain moved onshore over the Northwest.

A low pressure area shifted east northeastward across the Great Lakes and southeast Canada. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system extended south southwestward over the Midwest, the middle Mississippi Valley and the southern Plains. As this frontal system collided with a warm and humid air mass, multiple clusters of thunderstorms broke out across the Midwest, the Deep South, the Gulf Coast, the southern Plains and the central Plains. Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued in eastern Colorado, southern Oklahoma and northern Texas. McLean, Texas, reported 1.00 inch sized hail and 60 mph wind gusts. South Bend, Ind., reported a midday total of 1.89 inches of rain. Just to the east, scattered showers persisted along the coast of the Carolinas due to Tropical Depression Julia. Most states across the northern Mid Atlantic and New England stayed clear of precipitation.

Meanwhile, a cold frontal boundary approached the Pacific Northwest. Showers developed ahead of this system over parts of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and western Montana. Quillayute, Wash., reported a midday total of 0.71 of an inch of rain. High pressure kept the Southwest warm and dry on Saturday. Palm Springs, Calif., recorded a midday high of 97 degrees. Bullhead City, Ariz., recorded a midday high of 95 degrees.
