Tropical Storm Paine Could Bring Moisture to Southwest U.S.; Expected to Become a Hurricane Overnight

September 18,2016
Tropical Storm Paine will move northwestward parallel to the coast of Mexico's Baja California over the next several days.
Some moisture from Paine may get pulled into the Southwest U.S. early this week, enhancing shower and thunderstorm activity.
Here's the latest from the National Hurricane Center:
  • Paine was located about 345 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, as of Sunday evening.
  • The tropical storm is expected to gain some strength into Monday before weakening into a remnant low by Wednesday.
  • Paine is expected to become a hurricane briefly on Monday before it begins to feel the effects of cooler water.
  • Paine's circulation center will never impact land directly before it fizzles.
  • That said, some moisture from Paine will get drawn northward into the Southwest U.S. early this week by an upper-level low off the coast of California. This may lead to an uptick in shower and thunderstorm chances Monday night into Tuesday over far southern California and the Desert Southwest.
