Deadly pileup shuts down I-90 in Lake County, Ohio

A multi-vehicle accident involving cars and tractor-trailers occurred amid snowy weather and caused the shutdown of Interstate 90 in Lake County, Ohio, on Wednesday afternoon.
The accident led to multiple fatalities, according to Fox 8 in Cleveland. At least 17 people were injured, three critically, the news station said.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office first reported the accident on their Facebook page around 2:32 p.m. EST. Both eastbound and westbound lanes have been shutdown to allow crews to clean up the cars and trucks that were damaged. Motorists were told to avoid the area.
The sheriff's office said at least 15 tractor trailers would need to be cleared from the road and injured victims were being transported to local hospitals.
Around 6:30 p.m. EST, I-90 eastbound was reopened to traffic, while the westbound route was expected to reopen with one lane about one hour later, according to the sheriff's office.

Lake-effect snow squalls were ongoing throughout much of Northeast Ohio throughout the day on Wednesday.
"Heavy lake-effect snow squalls were moving through the vicinity early this afternoon," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Carl Erickson said. "In addition, winds were strong out of the west, gusting to 25-30 mph at times. Any snow squall can greatly reduce visibility and put down a lot of snow in a short amount of time."
Lake-effect snow squalls will continue in this area overnight into Thursday, he added.
