Washington, D.C., will face a brief burst of cold air and howling winds before evolving into a milder weekend.
"Thursday will develop into a bitterly cold day with biting winds of 20 to 30 mph," AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Maggie Samuhel said.
With the strong gusts, AccuWeather RealFeel® temperatures could hit below the 20 F mark even with plenty of sunshine filing the skies.
In the district, daytime highs could hit in the teens. For surrounding areas, temperatures could dip into the single digits.
Through the night, overnight lows will tumble across the metro area.

Friday will bring a return of near-normal temperatures as sunshine prevails.
"Winds will generally subside and conditions will be warmer," Samuhel said.
The expected daytime high is right around the 40 F mark. Normal daytime highs for this time of year are near 45 degrees.
