US National Weather Summary for December 10,2012

Frigid air moved into the Plains on Monday as a cold front pushed into the Appalachian Mountain region. The sharp contrast between the warm and humid air in front of the front and the cold air to the West brought strong thunderstorms to the East from the Gulf Coast through the Northeast. Tornadoes and large hail were reported In Mississippi and Louisiana, with more steady rain and occasional thunderstorms further north.

The cold air in the Plains brought temperatures crashing on Monday, with high temperatures in the single digits for many locations and keeping much of the nation’s mid-section from breaking out of the 20s. Clear skies will accompany the chilly weather, allowing temperatures to dip even colder overnight. Single digit lows will be common in the Northern Plains, with the coldest lows expected to drop below 0 degrees monday night.

In the West, pleasant weather continued, with warm temperatures and generally clear skies for most of the region. Clouds had moved into the Northwest, but California saw clear skies and warm weather most of the day.
