The storm bringing a wintry mess to the Midwest through tonight will spread eastward into the Northeast on Sunday into Monday.
Old man winter will make a visit to towns and communities from central and northeastern New York state north and eastward into northern Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire. Eventually, the wintry precipitation will spread into Maine. The storm system moving into the Midwest will gradually weaken as it tracks across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast. As the weakening storm tracks towards the New England coastline, another center of low pressure will develop to the south over the mid-Atlantic late on Monday night.
Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? Check out the probability here.
The storm will create hazardous travel conditions for those heading out this weekend to do some holiday shopping. Icy conditions and snow accumulations will create slippery roadways.
Not everyone will see the wintry weather as a nuisance, those hoping to hit the ski slopes across New England will welcome the snow.
With cold air initially in place throughout the majority of the region, most locations will start off with snow. Locations along and near the coast will initially start as rain or quickly transition to rain.
As warmer air flows northward on Sunday afternoon, precipitation across southern New England will change over to a wintry mix of snow, sleet and rain. Before this occurs, many will have a light accumulation of snow.
Freezing rain could be possible in some spots, particularly in valley locations of upstate New York and New England.
Across interior New England, enough cold air should remain in place to allow for a prolonged period of snow. Snow in these areas will begin during the late morning and early afternoon hours on Sunday and last through Tuesday morning. Snow will then spread into parts of Maine late on Sunday afternoon.
Snow accumulations will generally be between 2-4 inches with higher amounts, greater than 6 inches, possible in some locations.
