Leaves
change color mainly due to a reduction of sunlight. As October
progresses, the daylight period continues to grow shorter and the sun's
rays are not as intense. When the light dwindles, the green cells within
a leaf that require a certain amount of light die. This exposes other
cells in the leaf which are yellow, red or orange. In time, not even the
bright-colored cells can survive. The leaf will then turn completely
brown and eventually fall from the tree.
