Cold weather will ease up a bit and major storms will stay away from Pittsburgh through Monday.
Temperatures are forecast to reach the lower 40s for the first couple of days of December.
In the wake of locally heavy snow, rain and a wintry mix on multiple days this past week, very little precipitation will fall around the area the next several days.
A weak storm system will pass by to the north on Sunday, but good travel conditions are in store locally.
Only spotty flurries are in the offing around Pittsburgh in the wake of that system on Monday, which is the first day of deer hunting season in Pennsylvania.

Post-Holiday Travelers May Face Snow, Rain Delays Sunday

As the holiday weekend comes to a close, a large portion of the nation will have good weather for the return trip home Sunday, but there will be a few areas dealing with snow, rain and travel delays.
According to AAA, 43.3 million people were estimated to travel from Wednesday to Sunday this year with most of those people traveling by automobile. Sunday is the second biggest travel day during the period and the single busiest day for those flying home over the holiday weekend.
Photos.com image.In the wake of "Gobblegeddon," a large, slow-moving winter storm that caused travel headaches during the days prior to Thanksgiving this year, the weather for the trip home will be favorable weather wise for most people. There will be some exceptions.
The nastiest weather for travel will be over the Northwest Sunday and Sunday night. Some slippery roads are also possible in northern New England Saturday night into Sunday.
Northwest
A storm system will drop southward over the Northwest Sunday into Monday, along with a push of colder air.Rain will spread from Seattle to Portland, Ore., Sunday and can become locally heavy at times along the I-5 corridor. Rain is forecast over Spokane, Wash.
Flight delays are possible due to rain, low ceilings, poor visibility and windy conditions at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
Snow levels will start off above pass level through the Cascades but will begin to lower late Sunday night.
For those heading home Monday, rain will change to snow in the hills around Seattle and over Snoqualmie Pass, Wash., as much colder air settles in.

Snow will also fall over the mountains of northern and central Idaho and northwestern Montana Sunday into Monday along the I-90 corridor.
Upstate New York, New England
A weak disturbance will spread a swath of light snow and flurries across part of upstate New York and northern New England Sunday.Enough snow can fall in some areas to cause slippery spots along parts of I-87, I-89, I-91 and the upper reaches of I-95 in Maine and I-81 in New York.
Spotty showers of rain, sleet and wet snow can occur over southern New England to coastal New York and New Jersey. However, not enough shower activity will occur to cause significant travel delays on the roads and at Boston/Logan and New York City area airports. A few roads may be wet.
The storm will greatly strengthen Monday and Tuesday, kicking up winds, but most of the heavy snow and rain will fall east of New England.
Florida
Much of Florida will be free of rain Sunday, but a flow from the Atlantic Ocean can bring spotty showers along the I-95 corridor on the east coast.Not enough rain is forecast to fall to greatly impact travel on the roads and at Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville, Fla., airports.
Rest of the Nation
The remainder of the nation should not have travel disruptions due to the weather Sunday.Spotty rain that affected part of the coast of Southern California, including Los Angeles, will have moved away.
Only very spotty rain showers will affect the interior South, with very spotty flurries over the northern Plains. The weather around Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago and Minneapolis should be generally dry Sunday.

A weak storm system will brush the Boston area Sunday with spotty showers of snow, sleet and rain.
Temperatures are forecast to jump Sunday on the southern flank of a system spreading a swath of light snow and flurries across upstate New York and northern New England.
Temperatures are forecast to reach into the 40s Sunday. After RealFeel® temperatures in the teens from recent days, it may feel much warmer for some folks spending considerable time outdoors.
Not enough precipitation is expected to fall around Boston to greatly impact roadway or air travel.

Rain, Snow, Cold for the Northwest Late Weekend, Next Week

Soaking rain, snow and a blast of cold air is heading for the Northwest later this weekend into early next week.
While the ski resorts in the Cascades and northern Rockies will welcome the fresh snow, it will create hazardous driving conditions, especially through the passes.
Snow will be heavy at times Sunday into Monday, and the heavy snowfall rates will significantly reduce visibility and cause roads to become snowpacked and treacherous.
Gusty winds over 30 mph will also accompany this storm.
The winds will cause snow to blow and drift and can also cause localized power outages by snapping off tree limbs.
Times of heavy rainfall can cause localized flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas, especially in the foothills of the coastal ranges of Washington and Oregon and the Cascades.

Cold Eases in East, Blasts Into West
Interstate 90 through the Washington Cascades and across northern Idaho and western Montana will be affected, along with Interstate 15 in western Montana.
Snow levels will start out around 5,000 feet Sunday morning in the northern Rockies then fall Sunday night into Monday as colder air arrives, getting down to the valley floors across Idaho and Montana by Monday morning.
By late Monday into Monday night, snow levels will fall below 1,000 feet across western Washington southward into western Oregon.
Seattle, Wash., and the surrounding lowlands can get snow showers mixed with rain showers late Monday and Portland, Ore., can see a snow shower Monday night.
Temperatures across the Northwest will be abnormally cold into the middle of next week.
Several locations, including Seattle and Portland, will flirt with their record low temperatures both Tuesday night and Wednesday night.
AccuWeather.com meteorologists are forecasting nighttime temperatures to dip into the teens and 20s.

December Temperature Flip: Cold Eases in East, Blasts Into West

An upcoming flip in the weather pattern across the nation will send the cold air into the Northwest and will allow the cold to ease in the East and South.
During the first week of December, frigid air will push southward across western Canada and into the Northwest United States.
According to AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson, "The Arctic air will deliver the lowest temperatures of the season so far for Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle and Spokane, Wash.; and Portland and Medford, Ore."
The pattern could bring the first snow of the season to part of the Washington and Oregon coasts.
Late next week, the pattern will also send the coldest air of the season so far into California.
As the cold settles into the Southwest, it will help to add fuel for a series of winter storms originating from the Pacific.
The storms next week will bring a wide variety of precipitation, and perhaps episodes of high winds, to the West.

Eventually, the storms will find their way into the Midwest and part of the Northeast.
There is a chance of severe weather in parts of the South and Central states with one or more storm systems as well.
AccuWeather.com will have more information on the stormy pattern in the coming days.
As the cold air pushes southward in the West, a seesaw-effect will allow the cold to retreat over the South, much of the Midwest and to some extent in the Northeast next week.
"There will be some atmospheric resistance to the warmup in the Northeast, but temperatures will trend back to normal levels for at least several days," Anderson stated.
Most folks in the South will not be shivering next week and should be able to hang up the heavy jackets and coats.
During the second week of December, it appears the west to east temperature extreme will ease a bit, but more shuffling around in the pattern is likely as the month progresses.

2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season Closes Without Any Major Hurricanes

Overall, 13 systems spun up in the basin since June 1, one more than average for the season.
Hurricanes, however, were in short supply. Only two, Ingrid and Humberto, formed this season, compared to the average of six.
Of those two, neither became major hurricanes. A major hurricane is defined as a storm that reaches Category 3 or higher. Typically, the Atlantic yields three major hurricanes per season.
Though the tropics looked prime for an active season back in June, several factors developed which inhibited the strengthening of the storms.
"Above normal shear across the Gulf into the northwestern Caribbean hindered development when it combined with a lot of dry air," AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist and Long-Range Forecaster Bob Smerbeck said.
Additionally, cold water nosing southwestward in the eastern Atlantic and a significant amount of African dust further stifled the set up for stronger, longer-lasting storms.

"You can develop a tropical storm in a semi-dry environment but for a hurricane you need lights winds and a relatively moist environment," Smerbeck said.
According to the NOAA, based on collective strength and duration of named storms and hurricanes, the 2013 season is expected to rank as the sixth least-active Atlantic season since 1950.
"We definitely had struggling systems this year," Smerbeck said. "Dust usually settles down when you get into the meat of the season but dry air stayed around this season."
Over the course of the season, only one storm made landfall in the United States.
Named Andrea, it was the first Atlantic storm of the season and brought severe weather, including tornadoes, heavy rain and flooding to parts of the South, killing one.
Mexico, on the other hand, was buffeted by three storms which originated in the Atlantic basin.
"When you're fighting dry air and shear, you're fighting a losing battle. They are the two worst things for tropical development," Smerbeck said.
Forty-five hurricane hunter aircraft reconnaissance missions were flown over the Atlantic basin this season by NOAA and the U.S. Air Force Reserve. The flights totaled 435 hours, the fewest number of flight hours in any season since at least 1966.
According to NOAA, the 2013 hurricane season was only the third below-normal season in the last 19 years, since 1995, when the current high-activity era for Atlantic hurricanes began.
Mostly Sunny Weekend for Atlanta

After a shot of cold, arctic air blasted into the South earlier in the week, temperatures will rise into the mid- to low 50s and remain there throughout the weekend.
Skies will be mostly sunny through the start of the next week, with just a few occasional clouds. Temperatures will mostly be in the mid- to upper 50s, with a dip to the 50-degree mark on Saturday.
Overnight lows will gradually increase from the lower 30s into the lower 40s each day of the weekend with a bit of increased nighttime cloud cover.

Conditions on the roads should be clear Sunday for holiday travelers making their return home from Thanksgiving. Rain and snow showers across the Northeast and Northwest, however, could cause more residual flights delays out of the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
By Monday the skies will be considerably cloudier, with very slight chances for a passing shower. Temperatures will remain in the upper 50s before climbing into the mid-60s later in the week. The next chance for rain comes next weekend.

Australia Zoo Handler Attacked by Tiger

The handler, Dave Styles, was taken by helicopter to a hospital after the tiger dragged him into a pool and bit his neck and shoulders during a show Tuesday at the Australia Zoo in Queensland.The zoo said Styles was recovering and in stable condition.
Zoo officials said Styles was wearing a poncho, and the tiger may have mistaken him for its favorite biting toy.
News reports said several dozen people witnessed the attack.
Steve Irwin, whose family owns the zoo, was an Australian television personality and wildlife expert who died while filming an underwater documentary in 2006.

Hundreds Evacuated in Ohio After Railcar Leak

Local responders, CSX crews and cleanup workers planned to work through Wednesday night to vacuum liquid and remove the affected soil in the area of the spill in Willard, about 65 miles southwest of Cleveland.
Four cars derailed at the rail yard late Tuesday while switching trains, and officials believe that's when one car was damaged, said Gary Sease, a spokesman for the freight railroad. An investigation into the cause is ongoing.
No injuries were reported.
The damaged car leaked about half of its 26,000 gallons of styrene monomer, which is used to make various plastic and rubber products, Sease said.The liquid leaked from a 4-inch hole for several hours before it was resealed, Willard's city manager, Brian Humphress, told The Sandusky Register.
Residents were told overnight to evacuate an area encompassing more than 425 homes, said Willard Fire Chief Joe Reiderman. They sought shelter with friends and family, at the high school or in local motels.
The evacuation was to continue into Thursday morning, when officials planned to reassess whether portions of the area could be reopened, Reiderman said. "We're hoping to get some people back in there."
Representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Ohio EPA are monitoring the cleanup.
CSX is providing hotels to the evacuees and planned to offer Thanksgiving meals to residents and first responders impacted by the spill, Sease said.
Jennifer Barnett told The Blade in Toledo that police awoke her family around 2:30 a.m., and she, her husband and her three children were taken to the school by van, without their own vehicle.
"Most likely we're not going to have Thanksgiving with our family," she said.
