At least two people died and dozens of cars were stranded on roadways that quickly became inundated Wednesday afternoon as flooding swamped Johannesburg, South Africa.
Images from social media showed roads covered in fast-moving floodwaters, and motorists abandoned their vehicles as the water rose, according to Eyewitness News. Spokesman Max Cohen told the Rosebank Killarney Gazette that one person drowned in Linksfield, located in the northeastern section of Johannesburg, where about 100 cars were stranded in floodwaters.
"There is a large number of cars, about 80 to 100, stuck in water on the N3 highway near Linksfield offramp in Johannesburg," Russel Meiring, a reporter for ER24, told Eyewitness News. "Numerous services are on scene and others making their way there to assist with the patients and people stuck on the scene."

Around town, the flooding caused numerous other problems. At the Johannesburg Zoo, a boundary wall and a nearby bridge were destroyed by the flooding, according to a separate Rosebank Killarney Gazette report. No injuries have been reported from that incident, the report added.
The storms also forced flights to be diverted from O.R. Tambo International Airport in Gauteng, not far from Johannesburg, according to eNews Channel Africa. A section of the roof may have collapsed at the airport, the Times Live reported.
