Nicole Is Now a Category 2 South of Bermuda

October 6,2016
Hurricane Nicole became the sixth hurricane of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season well south of Bermuda in the central Atlantic Ocean, to the east of Hurricane Matthew.
This upgrade Thursday afternoon was based on the appearance of an eye in visible satellite images. Continued organization during the day led to an upgrade to Category 2 status.
Unlike Matthew, Nicole will not impact the United States.
Here's the latest from the National Hurricane Center:
  • Nicole was located about 340 miles south of Bermuda, as of Thursday evening.
  • Increased wind shear on Friday should induce weakening.
  • This system is no threat to the U.S. mainland.
  • Nicole is expected to remain south of Bermuda, but will likely move slowly and erratically over the next few days due to being in an area of weak steering currents beginning Friday.
  • Bermuda will likely experience rough surf conditions over the next few days.
