Rain and mountain snow will impact the Northwest on Monday, while an area of low pressure transitions across the Great Lakes.
A low pressure system will shift eastward over the upper Intermountain West and the northern Plains. This system will usher moderate to heavy snow across the northern and central Rockies. A mixture of rain and snow will affect the lower elevations of the Intermountain West, as well as the northern high Plains. By the afternoon and evening, showers and thunderstorms will break out ahead of this system over the northern Plains and the western edge of the Midwest.
Just to the west, an onshore flow from the Pacific will fuel rain and mountain snow across the Pacific Northwest, northern California and the northern Great Basin. Winter storm warnings are in effect for the northern Sierra Nevada and the Cascades. Strong winds are also forecast for Oregon, northern California, northern Nevada and Utah, especially along western facing mountain slopes.
Meanwhile, an area of low pressure will transition northeastward over the upper Midwest, the Great Lakes and southeast Canada. This system will usher light to moderate rain across the upper Midwest. A mixture of rain, freezing rain and snow will impact the northern Mid-Atlantic and New England. In addition, showers and thunderstorms will fire up over the Ohio Valley, the Tennessee Valley and the southern Mid-Atlantic.
High pressure will dry conditions out across most of the southern Plains and the Deep South on Monday.
