Temperatures are set to soar over the eastern U.S. this week, providing an early taste of May warmth.
Temperatures are expected to approach or even top 70 degrees Fahrenheit in many places during the middle of this week, including New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
"After a blast of chilly air across the East over the weekend, temperatures will be off to the races for the first part of this week as a strong southwesterly flow brings warmer air northward," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dan Pydynowski.
The warmer weather will be perfect for outdoor activities, especially during the middle of the week.
"Highs may be around 20-25 degrees above average on Tuesday and Wednesday," Pydynowski said.
This warmup will be fueled by an area of high pressure centered between the Carolina coast and Bermuda.
While much of the week will feature temperatures well above average, Wednesday looks to be the warmest day for most places in New England and the eastern Great Lakes. Thursday may be just as or slightly warmer as Wednesday in the mid-Atlantic.
Record highs will be challenged when the warmth peaks. Most of the records that will be challenged sit in the Northeast. In the southern mid-Atlantic, records are around or even above 80 F, which will likely be out of reach in this warm spell.

The southern mid-Atlantic will only experience slight cooling on Friday in the front's wake with a more noticeable drop in temperatures over the Northeast.
Despite the cooldown, temperatures outside of northern New England later this week will still remain above typical mid-March levels.

Nice,
but hello..there are people that actually live west of I95
corridor..this map shows the midwest, Ohio Valley, the Great Lakes,
Ontario, Canada, but not one mention of any if these areas where
millions of people live, and will pretty much experience the same
conditions

The
average first 70 degree temperature is late April in Washington, DC?
They might be talking about average highs. Because I don't see how that
can be true, considering average highs are already in the low 70's by
the end of April in DC. I'm not sure about our average date of the first
70 degree temperature here in central VA, but this what I've found when
looking back at our weather data since 2000 for our first 70 F.

2001: Mar. 24
2002: Jan. 30 (record high)

Late
April in DC?. That is not possible as the first average 70F in
Cleveland OH is March 24th, and I know for a fact that it has got to be
earlier then that in DC. They must be on something!
Aaron Ginther ·
I
don't live far from DC, so my weather conditions are pretty much the
same. And I can say, unless we were somehow picked up and thrown several
hundred miles north, we'd have hit 70 well before late April.
And NYC not hitting 70 until the middle of May? That's around the time we have our average first 90 degree temperature!

Neven Prvinic ·
Maybe
they meant that the average hits 70 around that time, as we hit 70F for
normal in mid May, similar to NYC, so that would make sense but they
wrote it poorly.
Aaron Ginther ·
That's probably what they were trying to say, because our average high hits 70 on April 20th.

It
seems my dates vary more widely. Anytime there is a warm surge that
boosts temperatures to record levels, a 70 degree day CAN be seen even
during the coldest time of year. Like in late February 2000, late
January 2002, early January 2004, early January 2007 & 2008, and
February 2012. Again, it CAN happen. Doesn't happen every year, but it's
just one of those things that can't be ruled out, nor expected. In a
situation like 2013, we'd hit 70 on the nose on January 30th, then we
wouldn't see it again until early April. But usually our first 70F of
the year is around early March, so I'd say we're on schedue.
Despite that, I think we all have the same weather patterns.

Neven Prvinic ·
True,
my area has hit 70 F in every month of the year historically, but it is
much more rare for us to hit 70 from December to February then it is
for your are in VA. That is why our first 70 on an average is March 24,
and our first 80F is on April 23 (in my lifetime first 80F came here as
early as March 5 1983, and as late as June 10 1997. As for the last 80F
in the fall, i would say that the average is early October, and last
70F would be on an average in early November. As for 60F here, that is
similar to your 70F in VA, it can often happen in any month. For example
this winter we just ended had 60 F or higher in every winter month, in
fact more then once during those months.
Aaron Ginther ·
It
seems warm days like that here are more common in December than in
January and February. From 2000-2014, a period of 15 years, we've hit
the 70 degree mark 10 times in December, 5 times in January, and only 4
times in February. If we soar to 70 degrees in January, that's 26
degrees above the average high, which would explain why it's only
happened 5 times over the past 15 years. Record territory in January is
upper 60's and 70's. In February, interestingly.. it's been even more
uncommon to hit that mark. As for 60's, that's common during a warm
spell in the winter. Since January 1, we've had six days in the 60's. In
December 2015, the warmest December on record, there were FIFTEEN days
with a high of 60 or above.

NYC's latest first 70 on record is April 24. Normally, we should be
able to touch 70 (if fleetingly for one afternoon) by late March
Neven Prvinic ·
Our
latest 70F on record is also around April 25th, i think it was 1984.
Earliest 70 of the year is like january 10th not sure if it was 1930's
or 1950's. Of all 3 winter months here, January is the least likely to
hit 70. Decembet and February about same, with most being the first 10
days of December and the last 10 days of February, when these is some
season transitioning. We did hit 70 F in parts of the city this year on
2/20, but at the official reporting station. Hopkins Airport it was 68F.
Neven Prvinic ·
What
i stated above on frequency of 70F lowest in Januay and higher and
roughly same frequency in both December an February would be very
logical and expected, since the normal high is lowest in January, 35F,
while December and February both have the same average high of 38F,
which is higher then January. However even though both december and
february share the same normal high, February is overall colder then
December by 1F, as the low is higher in December at 26F, while February
is 24F. This is of course due to the shorter Decembef days, and much
more cloudy month then February is.
Neven Prvinic ·
Now
the frequency of 70's and 80's in much higher in March then it is in
November, even though on an average November is much warmer at 51F/37f,
then March is at 47/30F. This is as well due to longer days, more sun,
and more variable patterns in weather in March vs November.
It was a lame and unbecoming Winter!
