A low pressure system will move across the central third of the country on Tuesday, while a weak cold front shifts over the Northwest.
A robust area of low pressure will move northeastward across the central Plains and the upper Mississippi Valley. This system will generate gusty winds and heavy snow showers over the central Rockies, the central Plains, the upper Midwest and the upper Great Lakes. Blizzard warnings are in place for north central Kansas, eastern Nebraska, southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa and southern Minnesota. Winter storm warnings are also in place from the central Rockies to northwest Michigan. A warm frontal boundary associated with this system will extend eastward over the middle Mississippi Valley and the Tennessee Valley. A warm air mass will overrun cold air, which will create areas of freezing rain over eastern Iowa, southern Wisconsin, northern Michigan and Upstate New York. Additionally, a cold frontal boundary will extend south southwestward from the eastern edge of the southern Plains to the western Gulf Coast. A cold air mass will collide with warm and muggy air from the Gulf of Mexico, which will aid in the development of strong to severe thunderstorms. Severe thunderstorms will be possible in eastern Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, western Florida, northwest Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, southwest Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, southeast Missouri and eastern Arkansas. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes.
Out west, a weak Pacific system will move onshore over the Northwest. This system will bring light showers and high elevation snow to northern California, western Oregon and western Washington on Tuesday.
