Polar vortex to spread frigid air into northeastern US Valentine's Day weekend

The coldest air of the winter will plunge southward across much of the eastern United States and will feature single-digit and sub-zero temperatures in the Northeast during Valentine's Day weekend.
The polar vortex will send a dose of frigid air southward beyond the borders of Canada. Some of the air will slide directly southward from eastern Canada and avoid any warming effects of the milder waters of the Great Lakes. Instead cold and lake effect snow will head to the Snow Belt.

Following a month so far with temperatures averaging 5-10 degrees Fahrenheit above normal, temperatures during Valentine's Day weekend will plunge to 10-20 degrees below normal. Temperatures will be 30 degrees lower this weekend, when compared to highs at midweek.
The cold air will be dangerous for those spending time outdoors not properly dressed. In addition to the dangers from frostbite and hypothermia, the magnitude of the cold air can cause unprotected pipes to burst, water mains to rupture and batteries to die in vehicles.
The direct shot of arctic air will yield below-zero temperatures on one or more nights from the central Appalachians to much of New England, including Boston.

Lows in the single digits are in store from parts of northern and western Virginia to the Interstate-95 corridor of the mid-Atlantic, including the New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., metro areas.
According to AccuWeather Meteorologist Edward Vallee, "High temperatures in the I-95 mid-Atlantic corridor will struggle to reach the lower 20s by Sunday and may not reach 10 over the interior."

Wind and other factors will make it feel even colder. AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures will dip to 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the actual temperature at times.
This will translate to RealFeel Temperatures well below zero over the interior Northeast during much of the weekend and barely above zero for a few hours during the afternoon hours near the Atlantic coast.

RealFeel Temperatures can dip to minus 30 or lower in parts of upstate New York and New England during Saturday night.
Temperatures will dip into the teens as far south as parts of the Carolinas and northern Georgia.
At this time, it appears freezing temperatures will avoid the fruit and vegetable growing areas of central Florida during the weekend. However, temperatures could dip to frosty levels on a couple of occasions during the middle of this week, where and when skies are clear and winds are calm at night.
"Temperatures low enough to cause damage in the citrus growing areas of Florida are not likely this week," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dale Mohler.
"Temperatures could get low enough over unprotected fields of berry fruits and vegetables of north-central Florida to cause only spotty, minor damage north of Orlando at worst during the middle part of this week," Mohler said.
As quickly as the arctic air arrives this weekend, it will leave next week.
"While the temperature may get as low as all of last winter in some places this weekend, the cold air will not linger like it did last winter," according to AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams. "Temperatures will rebound over much of the East next week."

The extended forcast says we'll warm up by Tuesday with rain. But is there an outside chance the New York area could get hit with another snowstorm, especially if this storms moves further east putting NY on the western edge of this storm?

I love how Accuweather says "conditions may be dangerous outdoor activities late at night/in the early morning." It'll be dangerous 24 hours a day.

It looks like the extreme cold might be centered in the Interior Northeast.

The big saving grace is the lack of a deep snowpack. I doubt it will pile up like the last two years

Considering how high it was in '14 & '15, that's not bad at all

Our slight saving grace in northeast OH will be unfrozen lake Erie which should modily this cold air by about 10F as it travels across the lake from the north. That means that areas within 10 miles of the lake Erie shore may stay just above 10F on Saturday and stay just above 0F saturday night. The trade off may be clouds and few flurries and squalls off the lake off and on. I am not a fan of the heavy snow cover, but since my area east of the city is a large food producing country filled with vineyards, fruit orchards, etc, the snowcover is favorable over the bare ground during the extreme cold spells as it protects the vegatation.

Neven Prvinic good point. Also, despite the fact that I do not like cold weather, if I had to choose, I would prefer the fresh snow over the wet hard snow, since fresh snow is easier to shovel.

its a known fact that the walking dead come in under the cover of blizzard like conditions.Be grateful that there has been less snow.People really lucked out in that blizzard a couple of weeks ago.The majority of walkers tune into NOAA so they had no clue snow cover would be so good.Dont think you will be so lucky next time word is out that accuweather is now the prefered weather service of the walking dead.

I know winter 2015-16 isn't anywhere near as mild as 2011-12, but I hope this winter won't end up as bad as the previous two (2013-14 and 2014-15).

I hope it's worse wink emoticon

Why are you so selfish! Wanting to steal warmth from people on the west coast! Leave us and the 90 degree days alone and keep the -20F weather on the east coast! Shame on YOU!
