Typhoon Champi to Pass Near Iwo Jima

  • After strengthening into a super typhoon (150 mph winds) for a time on Sunday, Champi has weakend the last few days. Maximum sustained winds were 85 mph as of Tuesday night (EDT).
  • Champi may continue to weaken slightly through midweek as it curls northeastward on a path that will take it near Iwo Jima.
  • Champi is forecast to remain the equivalent of a Category 1 hurricane as it moves near Iwo Jima Thursday, local time. Interests there should be preparing for the potential of damaging winds, heavy rainfall and storm surge flooding. 
  • As of late morning Wednesday local time, winds were already gusting to 49 mph at Iwo Jima.

Champi: Track Forecast
The Japan Meteorological Agency upgraded Champi to a typhoon Thursday evening (mainland U.S. time), making it the 16th typhoon of 2015. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center followed suit in its 11 a.m. EDT advisory Friday.
Saipan reported sustained tropical storm-force winds for roughly four hours, along with a peak gust of 81 mph.

Some Cape Air flights were cancelled due to Champi on Friday, according to the Pacific Daily News.
