Tropical Storm Linfa Brings Flooding Rains to Philippines, Taiwan Next

While the Philippines will escape Tropical Storm Chan-hom, which will eventually make a run at super typhoon status, the same cannot be said for Tropical Storm Linfa.
Tropical Storm Linfa formed early Friday morning local time in the southern Philippine Sea and remains on track to target much of northern Luzon Island of the Philippines with heavy rain into early this week.

Linfa will meander off the coast of northern Luzon, moving very slowly northward through early this week as a strong tropical storm. Outer bands of heavy rain reached Luzon's northeastern coast on Saturday, with widespread amounts of 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) of rain being reported.
Rain then spread westward through Sunday, with drenching rain persisting in northwestern Luzon even into early this week.
"The biggest threat is flooding," AccuWeather Meteorologist Rob Richards said. "Rainfall amounts will generally be on the order of 75 to 150 mm (3 to 6 inches)."
There will be locally higher amounts with some communities being inundated with 300 mm (12 inches).

Northern Luzon Island will also face tropical storm-force winds of 65 to 115 kph (40 to 70 mph) that could lead to tree damage, power outages and some property damage through early this week.
Surf will continue to be rough in the Philippine Sea early this week, posing hazards for boaters and swimmers all along the eastern coast of the Philippines.
As Linfa tracks slowly northward, the storm looks to impact southern and central Taiwan, producing heavy rain across the island, particularly in the south and east. Rain will be heaviest on Tuesday and gradually diminishing throughout the day on Wednesday.
After soaking northwestern Luzon on Monday and Taiwan on Tuesday, Linfa will curve back to the northeast and meet its demise next week as stronger winds associated with Chan-hom arrive.
