After powerful thunderstorms struck the Northeast early in the week, the weekend will end up soggy for many with flooding also possible in some areas.
A storm system over Illinois and Indiana will become more organized Friday afternoon and set its sights on the Northeast for the weekend.
The heaviest rain is expected Saturday night, shifting from western Pennsylvania to central New York and to the I-95 corridor from Boston to Washington, D.C.
Outdoor events this weekend ranging from camping trips and weddings to pool days could require alternate planning. Baseball games from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon could have rain delays. This includes three home games for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the Braves at PNC Park and games Saturday and Sunday at Citi Field, as the New York Mets take on the Cincinnati Reds.
With this persistent rain, some downpours will also be possible, bringing the risk for flooding.
"With the slow-moving nature of this system and its gradual strengthening, heavy rain is inevitable," AccuWeather Meteorologist Evan Duffey said.
"Through Saturday and Sunday, a swath of 1 to 2 inches (25 to 55 mm) will be across the Northeast, with locally higher amounts," Duffey said.
With rainfall totals of this magnitude, some flooding problems may occur.
"We do not expect widespread flooding but more rather small stream flooding in south-central and southeastern Pennsylvania," Senior Hydrologist at the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center Scott Kroczynski said.
Heavy rain is likely to fall farther to the west over Pennsylvania, parts of Ohio and western New York. These areas have the potential for flash, urban and small stream flooding.
Flooding on roadways and poor drainage areas is also possible in the heaviest rain. Some major highways where traffic could be affected by downpours in this rainstorm include I-70, I-79, I-80, I-81, I-86, I-88 and I-90 during Saturday and Saturday night. Eastern parts of I-90 and I-87 will have more travel delays Saturday night into Sunday.

AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams explained that this rain comes as nature's way of balancing out the persistent dry weather in the West.
"This setup will end the extreme heat wave that has been baking the Southeast," Abrams said.
He further explained that the shape of the system in the Northeast and its exact track could make the difference between widespread flooding and just cooler conditions with showers and thunderstorms.
With the track of the system now shifting farther north, the weekend looks like heavy rain will pass through in addition to a more refreshing air mass for much of the East Coast by late Sunday.
- Cottone Mathere · Top CommenterIt is good that it is cooling off...even temp's in the 60's are too warm, as I am sure you will all agree.
- Vito Oiznop · Top Commenter · Duquesne UniversityYes....I agree...waaaay too hot.....why heavens to Betsy, I wish it would go no higher than 50, for crying out loud, I am so sick of this heat.....and I love the fact that we are losing a minute of daylight every day from now toward the equinox....don't you? ....because who needs brightness and warmth, when we can enjoy the cold and darkness that is the period between October and April......oh yes, & I am soooo happy that the countdown to fall and winter has begun....as I look so forward to frozen toes, and slipping and sliding on the roads, and worrying if I am gonna crash into a tree, phone pole, or someone else on the road....and shivering all day and all night, oh yes...Shivering is soooo much fun!.....and worrying if my car will start after a frigid night....not to mention cleaning off all of the mounds of pretty snow that ... - Neven Prvinic · Follow · Top Commenter · Cleveland State UniversityBy august we will know if this is another 2009 or 1992. It does not look or feel like 2014, as 2014 was better.
- Eric Bailey · Top Commenter · Westchester, New YorkI am not a fan of this miserable cool and damp weather. I am afraid that this Summer is going to be similar to last year. When is the heat wave is coming back?
- Grant McGuire · Top Commenter · Western Connecticut State University
- Vito Oiznop · Top Commenter · Duquesne UniversityDon't bet the barn on it coming back anytime soon.....I just hope come the first week of August when I go to the Delaware shore, that at least THAT part of the region, the WX cooperates....like it did last year......
- Grant McGuire · Top Commenter · Western Connecticut State UniversityCory Morrison No, Eric mistakenly thinks our 88, 87 & 90 from Sun-Tues was a heatwave.
- Cory Morrison · Follow · Top Commenter · Filing/Inventory Clerk at Independent Distributors Inc.Oh I see.
- Grant McGuire · Top Commenter · Western Connecticut State UniversitySO MANY people use the term "heatwave" every time it feels hot, even though it has to be three 90s in a row.
- Cottone Mathere · Top CommenterI am so confused! This article contradicts what I saw in my area's 45-day forecast. Why are there two different predictions on the same site? The 45 day forecast must be correct, since it is not written by a person, and so is not subject to human error.
- Neven Prvinic · Follow · Top Commenter · Cleveland State UniversityAccording to their 45 day forecast Cleveland OH will nevef go over 85 entire July. Records here go back to 1870 and that has never happened before and i am sure it will not happen now. I wonder if accu weather outsourced their 45 day forecast to India or China, and its been put together by someone who knows nothing about the weather or at least about the climate in our area. It seems like its same weather for days, and they use sun symbol but say it will rain, or put clouds on the day but the caption says "briliant sunshine". Sounds like outsoucing to me.
- Grant McGuire · Top Commenter · Western Connecticut State UniversityFor crying out loud, it's almost July. Going through this spring-like see-saw BS is the dictionary definition of "absurd".
- Cottone Mathere · Top CommenterIt looks like it will be another cool summer in upstate New York...only 5 months until winter...I can't wait...everyone loves frigid, windy, icy cold weather...

- Vito Oiznop · Top Commenter · Duquesne UniversityCottone Mathere Thy soul is now disturbed as it appears the sunshine and warmth we enjoyed for the last month an a half is now going to be permanently terminated, thus busting the whole summer....I knew this would happen....everytime we've had a heatwave in April and/or May, this always happens.....except for 1988 and 1991, this always happens....hate it! I really hope I am wrong.....otherwise our friends, Richarson, Brunel, and David will be on here dancing up a storm (literally) & rubbing our noses in it......
- Cory Morrison · Follow · Top Commenter · Filing/Inventory Clerk at Independent Distributors Inc.Maybe J Kevin will post daily again that February 2016 will be even colder than February 2015 if this pattern keeps up lol.
And lol Vito, don't forget Sokalowski, Kowalsky, Marko Doone, and that Adrian Kossakowski guy (However you spell his last name). They may be rubbing our noses as well. - Cory Morrison · Follow · Top Commenter · Filing/Inventory Clerk at Independent Distributors Inc.Cotton huh?
- Cottone Mathere · Top CommenterAnd have you folks heard this upcoming February could be even colder than Feb. 2015, with hardiness zone-crossing frigid air, due to the ridiculously resilient ridge on the West Coast?
- Vito Oiznop · Top Commenter · Duquesne UniversityMorrison....Me thinks you just created a hockey team!
- Cory Morrison · Follow · Top Commenter · Filing/Inventory Clerk at Independent Distributors Inc.That is apparently the frigid weather-loving team. You, me, Grant, George, Neven, and several others could be a part of the warm one lol. For July 2015, it will be an interesting match, though I think I deep down know who might win.
- Cory Morrison · Follow · Top Commenter · Filing/Inventory Clerk at Independent Distributors Inc.Cotton, are you trying to act like certain people who comment on here? Lol, funny.
- Vito Oiznop · Top Commenter · Duquesne Universitythen it wouldn't be a hockey team.....maybe it would be more like beach volleyball or something!
- Cory Morrison · Follow · Top Commenter · Filing/Inventory Clerk at Independent Distributors Inc.In that case, they would have to suck up to beach weather and complain that it's too hot.
- Neven Prvinic · Follow · Top Commenter · Cleveland State UniversityJuly 2015 will be colder then February 2015
- Cory Morrison · Follow · Top Commenter · Filing/Inventory Clerk at Independent Distributors Inc.Ted Dilbert, I know you haven't commented on here in like a month, but if you are reading this, how is your prediction of "won hondread dig greeze" all summer working out? Lol.

- Jim Fisher · Top CommenterWhy do the two maps in this post show the low in two different locations? Big difference in where the heavy rain will occur.
- Cottone Mathere · Top Commenterthe map with the low further north is, I think, more up-to-date. The close-up map from last night had the low where the zoom-out map has it, as I recall. It seems that accuwx has shifted the track. NWS still has very heavy rain in PHI area, whereas accuwx seems to have less heavy rain, although still a good amount.
- Cory Morrison · Follow · Top Commenter · Filing/Inventory Clerk at Independent Distributors Inc.Yet another summer in the crapper in the Great Lakes region.

- Cottone Mathere · Top CommenterI tend to trust what my local forecaster's say more...they are indicating the pattern will have more warmth and humidity, and that July 1-10 will end up 1.5-2 degrees above normal. However, with more moisture in the ground, that can hurt the ability for the Bermuda high to strengthen. I personally think that July 1-10 will end up normal, with July 11-20 running 2-2.5 degrees above normal. There are similarities between this summer and 2009 though. As both years have El nino's. A lot will depend how far south the cold fronts wind up. In June, the fronts were able to push all the way through, and led to an east wind. However, later in the summer, the fronts stall further north, which keeps things warm, muggy, with more storms. I don't really see a lot of extreme heat in this pattern, it is more like we will be in the :"ring of fire," with PHI area seeing the edge of the hot weather. At this point, it is too early to tell, but I think after a cooler period July 21-31, August will end up 1-1.5 degrees above normal. With the pattern allowing a higher chance for tropical systems to move up the coast.
- Cottone Mathere · Top CommenterIt's interesting that you mention this. I think a lot of this is due to the proximity of the two locations, with Harrisburg and PHI being relatively close together. A lot of the local guys and girls are saying the same thing. Although they aren't ready to commit yet as to whether or not the similarities will continue into September, as that is often when some of the biggest departures can occur, such as in 1998.
