Heat, Heavy Storms Shift to Berlin, Munich Saturday

Saturday is shaping up to be the hottest day since last summer in eastern and southern Germany, setting the stage for heavy thunderstorms to erupt.
Warmer air will pour across eastern and southern Germany to start the weekend with temperatures soaring into the upper 20s and lower 30s C (80s and lower 90s F).
For many, Saturday's heat will yield the hottest day so far this year and since last summer. This includes Berlin, where temperatures will flirt with the 32-degree-Celsius mark (90 F). The city has not endured such temperature readings since late July 2014.
A high near 21 C (69 F) is more common in early June.

As quick as temperatures soar, cooler air will arrive and significant knock down temperatures to end the weekend. The cooler air will first press into northwestern Germany, as well as the Netherlands, Belgium, northern France and the United Kingdom on Saturday.
Highs across eastern and southern Germany will be 6 to 12 degrees Celsius (10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit) lower on Sunday when compared to Saturday. The cooler air, however, will not sweep in quietly.

The cold front set to erase the heat threatens to trigger a couple of heavy thunderstorms from eastern Germany to Switzerland in the afternoon. Cities at risk include Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden and Munich, Germany, and Zurich, Switzerland.
The strongest thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, frequent lightning and blinding downpours.
Thunderstorms that accompanied the front on Friday kicked up winds to 113 kph (70 mph) at Chievres Air Base in Belgium.
The intense thunderstorms Saturday afternoon will diminish in the evening, setting the stage for the cooler end to the weekend. The cooler air will hang on to dominate the upcoming week.
