Harrisburg: Building Warmth to Fuel Severe Storms Monday

By , Senior Meteorologist

This week is shaping up to be much warmer than how June started around Harrisburg, but the warmth will set the stage for intense thunderstorms later Monday.
The door will open for warmer and more humid air to pour in on Monday as an area of high pressure slides off the coast.
Temperatures are set to soar into the lower 80s on Monday. The noticeable increase in humidity will lead to even higher AccuWeather RealFeel® temperatures.

As a cold front approaches and slices into the warmth, thunderstorms will erupt.

"Damaging winds and large hail will threaten areas from Kentucky and Tennessee northeast through Pennsylvania and southern New York [Monday afternoon and evening]," stated Andy Mussoline.
Harrisburg lies in the middle of the severe weather threat zone.
In addition to the damaging winds and hail, the heaviest thunderstorms into Monday night will unleash excessive downpours. Isolated flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas cannot be ruled out.
Any motorists caught in these downpours will face reduced visibility and a heightened risk of vehicles hydroplaning at highway speeds.
Anyone spending time outdoors should monitor AccuWeather MinuteCast® and be prepared to seek shelter. Even if someone is willing to withstand a downpour, the danger of being struck by lightning is present as soon as thunder is heard.

Another shower or thunderstorm will follow for Tuesday, threatening to interfere with other sporting events and outdoor events.
Despite Tuesday's unsettled weather and some clouds, temperatures will flirt with 85 F. A high in the upper 70s is common for this time of year.
The storminess will clear the area by midweek, but that does not mean a turn to cooler weather. Temperatures will instead rise into the upper 80s underneath sunshine and clouds on Wednesday.
Further warming is expected later in the week with temperatures set to once again flirt with the 90-degree mark.
