In March 1888, one of the worst blizzards in recorded history dealt a
devastating blow to the Northeast. Snow totals exceeded 50 inches in
some locations. The storm generated winds to near hurricane force, which
produced snow drifts more than two stories high. The huge amount of
snow occurred as a vast amount of ocean moisture was drawn westward over
a large mass of much colder air. In addition, the storm moved
incredibly slow and had an entire two days to impact the region.
