Frigid conditions will continue through the end of the week in the Chicago area, but a temporary shot of warmer air will arrive over the weekend.
Until then, temperatures will continue to hang in the single digits and teens with overnight lows below zero.
A weak disturbance will pass through the region Friday into Saturday and will bring a period of light snow and slippery travel.
"Light snow will fall as the workweek comes to an end, but amounts should not accumulate more than a coating to perhaps an inch," said AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Rob Richards.
A more potent storm system is expected to form across the central United States over the weekend and take a track into the Northeast.
Temperatures will rise as a result on Saturday with a high temperature in the low 30s F expected. This is still below average but will certainly feel much warmer compared to the bitter cold this week.

Accompanying the warmer air could be some wintry precipitation.
"Exact details are uncertain at this point with the weekend storm, but the risk for some additional snow is possible," said Richards.
If the storm tracks far enough to the east, Chicago will be spared most of the snow.
