While the Atlantic Basin is currently quiet, numerous infamous
hurricanes have formed in October. The most recent was Hurricane Sandy
in late October 2012. Sandy was directly responsible for at least 147
deaths across the Atlantic Basin. That number includes 72 deaths in the
mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the United States, which is the
greatest number of U.S. direct deaths related to a tropical cyclone
outside of the Southern states since Hurricane Agnes in 1972.
