The coldest air since last spring is descending upon the Midwest, leading to some communities in the Upper Midwest seeing their first snow of the season.
The snow fell hard enough that two inches accumulated in northwestern Wisconsin Friday night. A National Weather Service spotter reported that the weight of that amount of snow caused trees to bend and power outages in Hawthorne.
An inch of snow was estimated to have fallen in Alborn, Minnesota, where the snow whitened vehicles and the grass.
Wet snowflakes also spread southward to Chicago, marking the city's third earliest return of snow.
