Hurricane Fran made landfall on Sept. 5, 1996. Fran roared onshore in
the evening over Cape Fear, North Carolina, as a Category 3 hurricane
with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph. Numerous beachfront homes along
the North Carolina coast were destroyed or seriously damaged by Fran's
storm surge. Fran headed northwestward toward western Pennsylvania after
landfall, accompanied by heavy rain. Fran was retired after the 1996
hurricane season, being replaced by the name "Fay."
