The flash flooding proved deadly as one fatality occurred early Wednesday morning during an accident caused by the high water levels on the Long Island Expressway according to the Associated Press.
Islip, New York, received an overwhelming record of 13.27 inches of rain Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. The total eclipsed what the area usually receives over the course of an entire summer according to Kristina Pydynowski, AccuWeather.com meteorologist.
"They average 11.68 inches in all of meteorological summer (June through August)," she said.

rain in the past 24 hours, preliminarily setting a new all time NYS
record 24 hour rainfall!
"Torrential, steady downpours left tremendous amounts of rain in a short amount of time that caused widespread flooding in the mid-Atlantic," AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Mark Paquette said.
Roads stretching from Baltimore into parts of New York were closed and drivers faced prolonged delays.
As cleanup and recovery efforts begin, the weather should cooperate as the storm system is moving into the New England area.
Paquette said that no major rainfall is expected for the Long Island area but those in New England may deal with similar flash flooding concerns.
