Hurricane
Arthur will continue to move across the Eastern Seaboard on Friday,
while a cold frontal boundary will extend from the southern Plains to
the Northeast.
Hurricane Arthur is forecast to intensify as it treks northward over the East Coast. Arthur is expected to be upgraded to a category 2 hurricane, with wind speeds ranging between 96 to 110 mph (83 to 95 kts). This system will move across the coast of the Carolinas and over the MId-Atlantic, which will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to the region. Meanwhile, a cold front will stretch across the southern Plains, the lower Mississippi Valley, the Southeast, the Appalachians and the eastern Great Lakes on Friday. As this frontal boundary pushes eastward over a warm, humid air mass, strong to severe thunderstorms will develop across a handful of states. Severe thunderstorms will be possible from northern Virginia to southern Maine. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. In addition, heavy rain associated with these thunderstorms could lead to flash flooding over the northern Mid-Atlantic and New England. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will also develop along the southern tier of the frontal boundary, focusing over the southern Plains, the Gulf Coast and the Southeast.
Monsoonal moisture will make a return to the Four Corners on Friday. This moisture will trigger thunderstorm activity across the Four Corners and the Intermountain West. High pressure will keep the majority of the West Coast clear of wet weather on Friday.
