Despite weakening, the storm left thousands without power in North Carolina and caused significant flooding and widespread damage.
The storm will continue to track northward up the Atlantic coast, expanding rough surf with strong rip currents from the Delmarva Peninsula to New Jersey, Long Island and southeastern New England, according to AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Andy Mussoline.
