During late June 1972, Hurricane Agnes made landfall in the Florida
Panhandle and then made a rare loop into the Northeast instead of taking
a typical track off the coast. Another storm system drew Agnes, which
was a tropical storm at that time, back to the west. That resultant loop
led to rainfall total of 8 to 16 inches from northern Virginia to
southwestern New York. One location in western Schuylkill County,
Pennsylvania, topped the rainfall list with 19 inches.
