Although June is early in the Atlantic hurricane season, powerful
hurricanes can still form. Hurricane Audrey was the most intense
hurricane ever recorded in June. After forming in the southern Gulf of
Mexico, Audrey made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane near the
Texas/Louisiana border on June 27, 1957. A devastating storm surge came
ashore with landfall, causing widespread destruction and loss of
life.
