Thunderstorms will fire from the Upper Midwest to the Northeast along the northern edge of a zone of building heat through the middle of the week.
The storms can bring frequent lightning strikes, hail, strong wind gusts and blinding downpours and also can cause disruptions to daily commutes, other travel and outdoor activities.
Some of the storms will become severe at the local levels.
Similar patterns in the past have allowed the storms to form large complexes, and it's not out of the question that large storm clusters could form again this week. If this happens, then severe weather could occur on a more widespread regional basis.
Storms that organize into complexes can roll along during the overnight and morning hours, and can cover vast distances.

Storms traveling along on the rim of the heat can move along at a brisk pace, in many cases topping 40 mph.
Cities that have the potential to be hit by heavy and gusty thunderstorms Tuesday include Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland, Toronto, Buffalo and New York City.
According to Meteorologist Andy Mussoline, "It is a close call in Chicago both Tuesday and Wednesday as thunderstorms will be close by to the north and hot, mainly rain free weather will be poised nearby to the south."

During Wednesday, the potential for gusty thunderstorms and localized severe weather will reach over much of the same area but can extend as far to the east and south as Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York City.
On a couple of occasions, thunderstorms will roll across upstate New York, New England and neighboring Canada.
Meanwhile, at Omaha, Nebraska, home of the Collegiate World Series, there will be a risk of thunderstorms almost every day this week. A number of those storms will bring the risk of severe weather during the afternoon and evening hours.
If you can hear thunder you are at risk for being struck by lightning.
Because of the speed of many of the storms and the potential volatility of the weather pattern, people spending an extended period of time will need to keep an eye out for rapidly changing conditions.
Spotty storms can also pop up away from the rim of the heat within the hot and humid air mass. Most of these storms will only affect a small area.
Most of the storms will occur during the afternoon and evening hours, but there will be some exceptions.
Late in the week, a push of cooler air from eastern Canada will shove storms farther to the south along the East coast, but the zone of storms will hold over the Plains.
